Our automotive experts provide the following fuel system services:

STEERING

Steering systems for both cars and trucks have a lot of components.  Most steering systems are called Power Steering to indicate that there is a power assist system, usually a hydraulic pump and actuator, multiplying the force when you turn the steering wheel.  There are two primary types of steering box; 1) Worm gear with circulating ball bearings, and 2) Rack and Pinion.

In either case the components generally consist of:

  • Steering wheel
  • Steering shaft
  • Universal joints
  • Steering box
  • Ball joints
  • Tie rods
  • Pitman arm (not on rack and pinion)
  • Drag link (not on rack and pinion)
  • Steering arm(s)
  • Hydraulic pump
  • Hydraulic actuator
  • Steering wheel angle sensor
  • Tie rod turnbuckles or sleeves (for wheel alignment)

In addition, many modern vehicles now use dynamic steering to adjust either the ratio or the force (or both) between the steering wheel and the front wheel angle, based on the vehicle’s speed.  This variable ratio or force is controlled by software in either the ECU, a Chassis Control Module, or a stand-alone Steering Control Module.

Adding to the complexity of the steering system is the fact that it must work flawlessly regardless of the suspension bouncing the wheels up and down over bumps, or the roll of the vehicle during cornering, etc.  This is particularly complex in Front Wheel Drive, 4WD or AWD vehicles where there are drive axles and drive joints involved in the motions of steering and suspension.  Wheel bearings also experience similar dynamic forces so we often see wheel bearing wear and steering component wear occurring at the same time.

Steering is a critical safety system of any vehicle, and due to its complexity and harsh usage, it is imperative to diligently monitor and repair the components as necessary.  If they are not kept in good repair, further damage can be caused to the surrounding components, or worse, catastrophic failure of a critical component can cause the vehicle to lose control.
